FAQ

Questions people actually ask us

If something isn't covered here, email support — see terms and privacy for the full detail behind any of these.

Legal risk

Does the ADA actually apply to my website?

If your business serves the public and you're US-based (or serve US customers), courts have generally treated Title III of the ADA as applying to your website in the same way it applies to a physical storefront. There's no official exemption for small businesses — size affects how likely you are to be targeted, not whether the law applies. See why this matters for the fuller picture.

I got a demand letter. What does that mean?

A demand letter from a law firm claiming your site is inaccessible is a common pattern in this space, not a rare event — and it usually asks for a settlement rather than going straight to court. We're not lawyers and this isn't legal advice, but the practical first step is almost always the same: get a specific, accurate list of what's actually wrong on your site (a Zeniscan scan does this in minutes), and talk to an accessibility-focused attorney about your specific letter before responding.

Does the Equality Act apply the same way in the UK?

The mechanism is different — it's a duty to make "reasonable adjustments" rather than a direct accessibility mandate — but the practical effect for a website is similar: if disabled customers can't reasonably use your site, you're exposed. UK enforcement has leaned more on regulatory and reputational pressure than US-style demand-letter litigation, but the underlying fix is the same.

Does running a Zeniscan scan guarantee I'm compliant?

No — and we'd rather tell you that plainly than sell you false confidence. Zeniscan is an automated scan, not a legal opinion. It does not guarantee ADA or Equality Act compliance, or immunity from litigation. For confirmed legal risk, consult an accessibility-focused attorney. What it does give you is a real, specific list of the issues an automated tool can detect, so you're fixing actual problems instead of guessing.

How Zeniscan works

What does the scan actually check?

We crawl your site's key pages with a real browser and run axe-core, an open-source testing engine, against WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 at the A and AA levels — the standard most commonly cited in both ADA case law and UK accessibility guidance. See why Zeniscan for the full methodology, including what automated scanning can't catch.

How is this different from an overlay widget I could just install?

Overlay widgets typically adjust how your page looks in the visitor's browser without changing your site's actual code — so the underlying barrier is often still there. Zeniscan finds the real issues in your markup so you (or your developer) can fix them properly. Longer answer on the Why Zeniscan page.

Do I need a developer to act on the report?

For most fixes — yes, someone will need to edit code, templates, or CMS content (adding alt text, fixing a form label, adjusting a color). The report is written in plain English specifically so you can hand it to whoever maintains your site — in-house, freelance, or agency — without them needing to decode WCAG clause numbers first.

How long does a scan take?

A few minutes for most sites. You'll get an emailed report when it's done — no need to keep the tab open.

What's included in the free scan?

A real scan of your site with your top issues and an overall score, emailed to you — no card required. Paid plans unlock the full detailed report, more pages per scan, more monitored sites, and recurring rescans. See pricing for current plan details.

What does the human review hour on the Pro plan actually cover?

A real person who works with assistive technology reviews one of your scans by hand, for the judgment calls automated tools can't make reliably — things like whether an interaction genuinely works with a screen reader, not just whether the right ARIA attribute is technically present.

Billing

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancelling stops future billing, and you keep full access to your plan until the end of the period you've already paid for. There are no partial refunds for the remaining time, but nothing is cut off early either.

How do I cancel or change my plan?

Since we don't yet have a self-service billing portal, email support and we'll handle it directly — see the terms of use for the full policy.

Is my payment information safe?

Payments are processed by PayPal — Zeniscan never sees or stores your card details. See the privacy policy for the full list of who processes your data and why.
